Staring at Strangers

Stills from Staring at Strangers #1

Staring at Strangers #1, video, 03:00:00, 2024

After reading The Power of Patience by Jennifer L. Roberts in the Harvard Magazine, Ruth Ozeki decided to sit in front of a mirror for 3 hours to observe her own reflection, the book Timecode of a Face was the result. In my own practice I often start a project by journaling, which may take the form of taking a photo or walking the same route each day. For this project I decided to sit with my reflection for 3 hours, an uncomfortably long period of time.

Staring at Strangers #1 is the first in a series of video journals documenting the changes in my face over time. Each year on my birthday I will film another entry.

This first entry of Staring at Strangers was created while on residency at NARS Foundation in New York, 2024.
